Juanita Daugherty Graves 1923-2016

OBIT Graves WEBJuanita Daugherty Graves passed away July 22 in Sublimity, with her son, Brian, at her side.

Juanita was born on March 29, 1923, in Alcoa, Tenn., to Cecil and Bonnie Daugherty. She was the oldest of five children, Luke, Curtis, Helen, and J. Will. She had some great stories about growing up in the south during the depression. She had to quit school after eighth grade to help her father in the field and her mother tend to the other four children. She married John Royal Graves on Oct. 2, 1938. Their oldest son, Randy, was born in 1940. Soon after, Shelby Jean arrived in 1942, and David arrived in 1944. John was drafted into the marines during WWII, and she was left to care for her children while he was overseas. John was wounded and spent several weeks in the hospital before returning home. John’s brother, Droyle, was living in Mountain Home, Idaho, and called John and told him there was a job for him with Idaho Power.  They packed up their family and moved to Idaho. Soon after that, his brother moved to Burns and went to work for Edward Hines Lumber Company.  He asked John to come to Burns, so they did. John went to work for Edward Hines, and they soon built a home for their family. Juanita kept busy raising the children and tending to their home. Their fourth child, Brian, was born in 1951.

She always had a pot of beans on the stove, and a pan of cornbread in the oven. There was always plenty for anyone who dropped by. After a brief time of moving back to Tennessee, they settled in and made Burns their home. They built another home together where they lived for more than 40 years. John passed away in 1998, and Juanita continued to live in their home.

She enjoyed going to the Senior Center, and seeing her many lifelong friends. As her ability to get around declined, her son, Randy, moved back to Burns to help care for her. To our great sorrow, Randy passed away in January 2015. Knowing that she could not live alone, Brian moved her over to Sublimity, where she passed away.

She is survived by her sister, Helen; daughter, Jean; sons, David and Brian; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
