James Duaine Gardner 1935-2016

James (Jim) Duaine Gardner passed away peacefully in his sleep June 24 at his home in Burns.

Jim was born in Burns Oct. 17, 1935, to Katherine and Ennis Gardner, who already had a 2-year old son, Floyd Scott Gardner.

Jim moved to Ashland a year later, where he and his brother attended grade school and middle school. Jim moved back to Burns to attend high school at Crane, where he graduated in 1953. Jim had many jobs around Harney County, including being a ranch hand and working at Hines Lumber Company.

He married a local girl, Patty Colantino, and had two children, Vicky Lee and Patrick David, before moving to Sitka, Alaska, to make his fortune. He started out working on a tug boat and sent for his family a few months later to join him. There, he had another son, John Duane. He worked as a millwright for ALP in Sitka for 25 years.

Jim loved hunting and fishing and did a lot of both in Harney County and Alaska. While living in Sitka, he was known to take six weeks off in August and September, and go north to hunt moose, caribou, mountain sheep, etc. with friends. He raised his family in Sitka. Later, he moved to Petersburg, Alaska, where he married Bette Louise Power, the love of his life. They moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, for about 15 years before moving back to Burns after he had been gone 43 years.

He was very active in the Moose, including being elected Alaska Moose Association president. He was also an Elks member in Alaska and a member of the Masons in Burns. He loved to travel to conventions and such and did so a lot with the Moose in his younger years.

Jim is survived by his brother, Floyd, and wife, Donna Gardner; nephew, Bob, and wife, Linda Gardner; niece, Christa, and husband, Brian Graham; nephew, Vincent Gardner; daughter, Vicky Emert; son, John, and wife, Debbie Gardner; stepdaughter, Anne, and husband, Bob Williams; stepson, Michael, and wife, Julia Power; stepson, Patrick Power; granddaughters, Chelsie Modrell, Brittney Leslie, Amanda Gardner, Gabrielle Power, Lilliana Power, and Isabella Power; grandsons, Cole Gardner and Dwayne, and wife, Ralauni Smith; great-grandchildren, John-Isaac Gardner, Tianna-Jade Gardner, Khloe-Brianna Leslie, Kourtney-Anuhea Leslie, Jayce Smith, Kamia Smith, and Liam Smith; and cousin, Carol Altnow.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Katherine and Ennis Gardner; uncle, Scott Haley; aunt and uncle, Madeline and William Dunn; first wife, Patty Gardner; second wife, Bette Gardner; son, Patrick Gardner; and granddaughter, Heather Modrell.
