Hilander hoops teams pick up early season wins

The Burns girls basketball team won both of its games at the Irrigon Roundball Holiday Tournament held Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 29-30, at Irrigon high School.

In the first round, the Hilanders defeated Pilot Rock 58-41.

The teams were tied at 12-12 at the end of the first quarter, and Burns began to pull away in the second period, taking an eight-point lead into halftime.

After the break, the Hilanders stretched the lead to 10 in the third quarter, then finished off the game by outscoring Pilot Rock 16-8 in the final stanza.

Carli Feist led the Hilander scoring attack, finishing with 26 points. Catherine Clemens added 18 points in the win.

Burns downed Yakama Tribal, from Washington, in the second game 55-41.

The Hilanders battled to a four-point halftime lead, and then jumped to a 39-27 lead by the end of the third period.

Burns kept the momentum in the fourth quarter, and pulled away for the win.

Clemens dropped in 19 points, Feist had 15, Madison Carson eight, Lindsey Taylor seven, Taylor Crafts six, and Abby Nonnenmacher two.

On Saturday, Jan. 2, Burns downed Cove 68-24 in the league-opener for both squads.

The Burns boys basketball team improved to 5-2 on the season with a 67-48 victory over Crook County on Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Burns High School.

Ty Hueckman had the hot hand for the Hilanders, finishing with 33 points, including 15 in the third quarter.

Down 8-5 in the first quarter, the Hilanders’ Zach McDonald sank back-to-back 3-pointers to put Burns up by three, and the quarter ended with the Hilanders ahead 15-12.

In the second quarter, the Hilanders’ Ty Wayne Reid scored seven of his 11 points to help Burns take a 30-21 lead at halftime.

After the break, Hueckman started his 15-point outburst by making a pair of 3-pointers, and the Hilanders led 51-32 headed into the final eight minutes.

The Cowboys opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, but Burns answered with baskets by Trace Tiller and Reid, and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Tiller finished with seven points, McDonald and Scott Davies six each, and Brett Friedrichsen four.

The Hilanders faced the Irrigon Knights in the first round, and in a game that could have gone either way, it was the Knights coming out on top 45-44.

In the second round, the Hilanders defeated Pilot Rock 45-26 to improve to 6-3 on the season.

The Burns boys basketball team opened up league play on Saturday, Jan. 2, by defeating Cove 79-32, in a game played at Vale High School.

The game was supposed to be held at Burns High School, but because of the rally and march held in town that day, it was moved to Vale.
